Can acupuncture help cancer patients?

Up to 70 per cent of patients with advanced stage cancer suffer from pain for which they receive inadequate pain relief. This can lead to impaired physical and psychological well-being, resulting in a poorer quality of life (van den Beuken-vanEverdingen et al, 2007). Many practitioners consider acupuncture to be a viable way to combat this pain, particularly in the palliative care setting where there might be limited treatment options (Lian et al, 2014). In addition to pain, cancer patients commonly experience other unpleasant symptoms related to the cancer or its treatment, such as hot flushes, nausea, fatigue, vomiting and dry […]

Sports Acupuncture – Can It Benefit Strength Athletes?

Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that has long been sought after for its proposed benefits for the body. Its been around for nearly 2,500 years, and is one of the many ancient practices that continues to grow with the ever changing health industry. Being the skeptic I am, I wanted to learn more about this ancient form of Chinese medicine. I reached out to Peter D’Aquino L.Ac M.S., Diplomate In Oriental Medicine, of D’Aquino Acupuncture to learn more about how sports acupuncture might benefit the strength athlete. There’s still a lot of research needed behind sports […]

Community Acupuncture Found Effective For Pain

Acupuncture combined with supplementary Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) modalities is found effective for the alleviation of chronic neck, shoulder, back, and osteoarthritis pain. Researchers provided acupuncture treatments over the course of eight weekly sessions in a group setting. The researchers confirm that the therapeutic benefits of acupuncture have lasting results. All acupuncture treatments ceased at the eight week data point. A 24 week follow-up confirms that pain levels remain reduced even though no treatments were provided after the eight week data point. The total therapy package provided to participants included weekly acupuncture, Tui-Na massage, auricular acupoint stimulation, and Gua Sha. […]

Should you try acupuncture for acne?

Can Acupuncture Help Your Skin? It seems a little unorthodox, but if you’re struggling with breakouts like me, you might want to give it a whirl. According to experts, acupuncture might actually help your skin by reducing redness, stimulating collagen, and regulating your hormones. We’ve all heard the basics of acupuncture — it involves needles and something about Chinese medicine, right? Once I started researching acupuncture for acne, I realized there’s a lot that goes into this ancient practice. First things first — how does acupuncture work? And what is it exactly? Acupuncture is a practice in Traditional Chinese Medicine […]

Acupuncture Reduces Heart Disease Risk

Researchers conclude that acupuncture reduces the risk of coronary heart disease in patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia. A massive sample size of over 158,420 patients with fibromyalgia were included in the study. The researchers conclude that acupuncture “significantly decreased the risk of CHD [coronary heart disease] in patients with fibromyalgia with or without comorbidities.” The researchers note that acupuncture decreased the risk of coronary heart disease equally for both men and women. The risk of coronary heart disease increased with the age of patients; however, acupuncture decreased risks across all age groups. In addition, acupuncture decreased the risk of coronary heart […]

How to Treat Sports Injuries in Children Without Painkillers

Painkillers can have devastating effects on adults. These medications are addictive – they can cause debilitating side effects and, sometimes, they can even be lethal. In fact, the deadly heroin epidemic that’s laying waste to parts of the United States today was kicked off, in part, by prescription-related opioid abuse, according to many news sources. Children get hurt all the time – especially if they participate in sports or other physical activities, where they risk more than just a bump on the knee. An afternoon soccer practice or weekend gymnastics meet can easily lead to a hospital visit, where a […]

Acupuncture Soothes Gallbladder Attacks

Researchers conclude that acupuncture increases the clinical effective rate of the drug cefodizime for the treatment of acute exacerbations of chronic cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder). Xining Haihu Hospital researchers combined acupuncture with standard drug therapy. Patients receiving both drug therapy and acupuncture in a combined treatment protocol had superior patient outcomes compared with patients using only drug therapy. The VAS (Visual Analogue Scale) scores in the acupuncture plus drugs group were significantly better. The addition of acupuncture to drug therapy also produced significant improvements in the value of serum bilirubin and […]

The FDA has proposed that doctors learn about acupuncture as an alternative treatment for pain

The Food and Drug Administration released proposed changes Wednesday to its blueprint on educating health care providers about treating pain. The guidelines now recommend that doctors get information about chiropractic care and acupuncture as therapies that might help patients avoid prescription opioids. As opioid crisis flares, naturopaths and chiropractors lobby for bigger roles in treating pain In Oregon, the state Medicaid program decided to cover chiropractic care for lower back pain starting in 2016. Other states are considering similar moves. And earlier this year, the chiropractic industry cheered when the American College of Physicians recommended non-surgical treatments such as acupuncture, […]

Acupuncture For Dementia: Alternative Therapy May Help Initial Symptoms

Researchers have had a sneaking suspicion that combined acupuncture can effectively treat symptoms of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a precursor to dementia. In fact, acupuncture has been used to manage the disease for a while now. But the neurologists’ new study analysis is the first to offer a comprehensive look at the outcomes of both Western and Chinese studies. Some studies compared acupuncture directly to nimodipine — a calcium blocker that treats the progranulin gene mutation associated with dementia; while others measured the effect of acupuncture when combined with nimodipine. Results showed that acupuncture had a significant effect on patients’ […]
